A Clinical Review of 51 Cases of Postoperative External Fistula

Abstract
A clinical review is made on 51 cases of postoperative externa fistula from the intestinal tract which have been treated at Pusan University Hospital from November 1957 to December 1967.
1. The ratio of male to female was 2.2:1. In the majority age ranged from 21 to 30 years.
2. The most frequent sites of the intestinal fistula were the cecum (15 cases, 29.4%) and the distal ileum (21 cases, 41.4%).
3. Inflammation (37 cases, 72.5%) and surgical complication (9 cases, 17.6%) were implicated as the most important etiological factors.
4. Latent duration of fistula after first operation was 6¡­10 days in the majority (37 cases, 72.4%).
5. The most frequent complication of intestinal fistula was infections (15 cases).
6. Thirty seven paients were treated by conservatively and fourteen by surgery.
7. The overall mortality was 17.6%(9 cases). Moratlity rate of thepatient treated conservatively was 18.8% (7 cases) and of those treated surgically was 14.3% (2 cases).
